Friendship Peak Height in Feet & Meters – Everything You Should Know Before You Climb

If you are planning to climb Friendship Peak, the first thing you probably searched on Google is simple: What is the height of Friendship Peak?

The official height of Friendship Peak is: 5,289 meters 17,352 feet

But numbers alone don’t tell the full story.

Understanding what 5,289 meters actually feels like — physically and mentally — is far more important than just knowing the altitude in feet.

Let’s break it down properly.

Friendship Peak Height in Meters

The elevation of Friendship Peak is 5,289 meters above sea level.

To put that into perspective:

• Anything above 2,500 meters is considered high altitude.
• Above 3,500 meters, your body starts feeling noticeable oxygen reduction.
• Above 5,000 meters, it becomes serious high-altitude territory.

So yes, at 5,289 meters, Friendship Peak is a true high-altitude Himalayan expedition — not a casual trek.

At this height, oxygen levels are roughly 50% lower than at sea level. That changes everything: breathing, energy levels, recovery speed, and sleep quality.

Friendship Peak Height in Feet

For those more comfortable with feet:

17,352 feet

That means you are standing higher than most mountains in Europe, and well above commercial airplane cruising altitude inside mountain ranges.

Climbing above 17,000 feet is a milestone for many first-time mountaineers. It’s the level where you start understanding what real altitude feels like.

Where Is Friendship Peak Located?

Friendship Peak is situated near the popular mountain town of Manali in the Pir Panjal range of Himachal Pradesh.

The expedition gradually takes you from green valleys to rocky moraines to snow-covered slopes. By the time you reach the summit ridge at 5,289 meters, the landscape feels completely alpine and raw.

This transition makes the altitude gain feel natural — but don’t underestimate it.

Is 5,289 Meters Considered a 6000m Peak?

Technically, Friendship Peak is slightly below the 6000m mark. However, in the Indian mountaineering community, it is often grouped among beginner-friendly “6000m training peaks” because of its semi-technical nature and high-altitude exposure.

Even though it is 5,289 meters, the experience you gain here prepares you for peaks like:

• Yunam Peak
• Kang Yatse II

The altitude is high enough to teach you how your body reacts above 5,000 meters — and that’s extremely valuable.

How the Altitude Feels on Friendship Peak

Reading 5,289 meters on a screen is easy. Climbing it is different.

At around 4,000 meters:

• You start breathing heavier during uphill movement.
• Recovery takes longer.
• Hydration becomes very important.

At 4,500 meters and above:

• Sleep can feel lighter.
• Headaches may occur if acclimatization is rushed.
• Small tasks feel physically demanding.

At 5,000 meters and above:

• Every step feels deliberate.
• You need controlled breathing.
• Summit push becomes a mental game as much as physical.

This is why proper acclimatization is critical.

Why the Height of Friendship Peak Matters

Altitude defines difficulty.

Even though Friendship Peak is classified as semi-technical, its height makes it a serious expedition.

At 17,352 feet:

• Weather changes quickly
• Wind chill increases dramatically
• Oxygen drops significantly
• Decision-making must be clear

This altitude is high enough to command respect but manageable for well-prepared beginners under professional guidance.

That balance is what makes it ideal for starting a mountaineering journey.

Comparison With Other Himalayan Peaks

To understand the scale better:

• Friendship Peak – 5,289 m (17,352 ft)
• Yunam Peak – 6,111 m
• Kang Yatse II – approx. 6,250 m

While lower than those peaks, Friendship Peak provides similar glacier and snow-climbing exposure.

It acts as a stepping stone.

After experiencing 5,289 meters, moving toward 6,000+ meters feels more realistic.

Does the Height Make It Dangerous?

Altitude always brings risk — but risk is manageable with:

• Proper acclimatization schedule
• Good hydration
• Professional guide support
• Slow and steady summit pace

Most altitude-related issues happen when climbers ascend too fast or ignore symptoms.

Friendship Peak expeditions usually follow a gradual ascent plan, allowing your body to adapt naturally before summit push.

Height alone doesn’t make it dangerous. Poor planning does.

Base Camp vs Summit Height

Another important detail many beginners overlook:

You don’t jump directly to 5,289 meters.

The journey typically looks like this:

• Manali – around 2,000 meters
• Bakarthach – around 3,300 meters
• Base Camp – around 4,000 meters
• Advanced Base Camp – around 4,500 meters
• Summit – 5,289 meters

This gradual progression is what allows first-time climbers to attempt such altitude safely.

What Fitness Level Is Needed for 17,352 Feet?

At this height, technical skill is important — but fitness matters more.

To climb Friendship Peak comfortably, you should:

• Run 5–7 km without stopping
• Climb stairs continuously for 30–40 minutes
• Carry a 6–8 kg backpack for long hikes
• Have strong leg endurance

If your body is prepared, the altitude becomes manageable.

Why 5,289 Meters Is Perfect for Beginners

Friendship Peak’s height is not extreme — but it is real.

It gives you:

• Exposure to serious altitude
• Experience of summit night above 5,000 meters
• Snow climbing at high elevation
• Confidence for bigger mountains

It is high enough to challenge you, but not so high that it overwhelms a well-prepared beginner.

That’s a rare balance in mountaineering.

Final Thoughts

The height of Friendship Peak — 5,289 meters (17,352 feet) — is more than just a statistic.

It represents:

• Your first true high-altitude milestone
• Your introduction to thin air
• Your first real summit push above 5,000 meters

Understanding the altitude helps you prepare better. Respecting it ensures a safer climb.

If you train properly, acclimatize well, and go with a professional team, standing at 17,352 feet can be one of the most powerful moments of your life.

Altitude is not something to fear. It’s something to prepare for — and then conquer step by step.
